Residence permit for Study

(Article 39 of Legislative Decree No. 286/98 and subsequent amendments; Articles 44 bis, 45, and 46 of DPR 394/99 and subsequent amendments)

  1. For the initial issuance of the residence permit, the following documents must be provided:
  2. For the renewal of the residence permit, the following documents must be provided:
    1. Photocopy of documentation proving the availability of adequate financial resources for the duration of the residence permit. Student workers can demonstrate income through Form 2.
    2. Photocopy of the insurance policy valid within the national territory for the duration of the residence permit, covering the risk of illness and accidents.
    3. Photocopy of the certification attesting to the passing of at least one proficiency exam for the first renewal and at least 2 exams for subsequent renewals of the residence permit unless there are exceptional circumstances.
  3. For the issuance of the residence permit for student mobility within the European Union (Article 39, paragraph 4 ter), the following documents must be provided:
    1. Documentation from the academic authorities of the member country where the student has completed the study program, attesting that the study program to be pursued in Italy complements the one already completed.
    2. Photocopy of documentation proving the availability of adequate financial resources for the duration of the residence permit.
    3. Photocopy of the insurance policy valid within the national territory for the duration of the residence permit, covering the risk of illness and accidents.
  4. Photocopy of the certification attesting to the course of study to be pursued, endorsed by the Italian Diplomatic/Consular Representation at the time of visa issuance.
  5. Photocopy of the insurance policy valid within the national territory for the duration of the residence permit, covering the risk of illness and/or accidents.

NOTES:

  1. The residence permit for study allows part-time employment for a maximum of 20 hours per week and an annual limit of 1,040 hours.
  2. The residence permit for study can only be renewed if the entry visa was issued for the attendance of a multi-year course of study.
  3. The residence permit for study cannot be renewed for more than three years beyond the duration of the multi-year course of study.
  4. The residence permit for study cannot be used or renewed for the attendance of a different course of study than the one for which the visa was granted, except for transferring to another faculty permitted by the academic authority and entering a university-level course after completing studies in Italy or a middle/higher-level course.
  5. The residence permit for study can be converted into a work permit by acquiring a quota within the scope of the entrance flow programming decree by demonstrating compliance with the requirements specified in the regulation for the type of work performed:
    • by foreigners already legally present on the national territory upon reaching the age of majority;
    • by foreigners who have obtained a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Italy after completing the relevant course of study in Italy.
